Protocols for an Athlete with Symptoms

If an athlete or coach has one of the following six symptoms that cannot otherwise be explained, she or he will be isolated immediately.  The athlete or coach will then be sent home.

They will be directed to be tested.

Symptoms:New Cough
New Shortness of breath
New Sore throat
Fever > 100.4
New loss of taste or smell
Development of vomiting or diarrhea

Tested Positive- Symptomatic

Persons who experienced symptoms and have been tested for COVID-19 may return to school if the following conditions are met:

·       The individual no longer has a fever (without the use medicine that reduces fevers); and

·       Other symptoms have improved (for example, when your cough or shortness of breath have improved); and

·       At least 10 calendar days have passed since symptoms first appeared; or

·       The individual has received two negative tests at least 24 hours apart.

Tested Positive- Asymptomatic

Persons who have not had symptoms but test positive for COVID-19 may return when they have gone 10 calendar days past their test without symptoms and have been  released by a physician. Students may also return if they are approved to do so in writing by the student’s health care provider.

When an athlete gets tested, Cathedral requires a copy of the results whether negative or positive.  If it is a positive test then a doctor’s note to return is mandatory.

Cardiac Screening

Recent research suggests an increased prevalence of cardiac conditions in individuals previously diagnosed with COVID-19.  Student-athletes who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 are recommended to receive a cardiac screening with a cardiologist prior to returning to activity (workouts, practice and/or competition).

Exposure to a Person with a Positive Test

The Athletic Director will communicate through team communications if someone on their team tests positive.  If you feel your athlete needs to be tested, please do so.  When we have a positive test we report this to the Indiana Department of Education and the Marion County Health Department.  The Marion County Health Department will do all the contact tracing with the family of the positive test.

The Athletic Department would ask that you send us the results of this test so the Athletic Department is able to monitor all the sports.  The Athletic Department will monitor the effected program for any trends.  If we believe we have a trend we will contact the team and suspend workouts for the appropriate amount of time.

If your athlete has no symptoms they are allowed to continue to play but please monitor your son/daughter for symptoms and inform your coach and Mike Hunker as soon as possible if any unexplained symptoms begin.
