Brenda Kelly Retires as Cheerleading Coach

After 20 years of coaching our spirited and talented cheerleading squads, Coach Brenda Kelly has announced her retirement. Kelly started as a JV Coach at Cathedral in 2000, and has been the head coach of our varsity cheerleaders for the past 17 years. Our cheerleaders have advanced to Nationals the last 15 years, with their best finish being fourth place. Kelly cheered at Franklin College, which is where she met her husband, Joe. Joe Kelly is a 1974 Cathedral graduate, and was Father Pat Kelly’s first cousin. Kelly also has two children who attended Cathedral, Brandon ’01 and Kristin ’04. We are so appreciative for Brenda Kelly’s service to Cathedral, and wish her all the best in her retirement!

Cathedral High School is excited to welcome Kristen (Fischer ’10) Zupancic back to Cathedral High School as the new head cheerleading coach. Zupancic was a member of Cathedral’s varsity cheerleading team from 2006-2010, and was on Cathedral’s national competitive team that placed 7th at the National Cheerleading Competition in Florida. After graduating from Cathedral, Zupancic attended Indiana University, where she was a member of the Crimson All-Girl Cheerleading team from 2010-2014. Zupancic was also a four-year member of the Nationals competitive squad. In 2011, she was named an All-American Competitive Cheerleader by American Cheerleader Magazine. In addition, she was a four-time winner of the Spirit of Indiana Award, an honor that is given to the IU cheerleader who best personifies what it means to be an exemplary student-athlete at IU. Zupancic returned to Cathedral cheerleading coach in 2014 and 2015. In 2016, she returned to IU as an assistant coach. During her three years of coaching at IU, the All-Girl Crimson Squad won two national championships!

Zupancic brings more than 13 years of cheerleading experience to Cathedral, and is excited to have the opportunity to be the head coach at her alma mater and a place she holds near to her heart.
