Megaphone named 2019 Hoosier Star Finalist

For the fifth consecutive year, the Indiana High School Press Association has named the Megaphone, Cathedral’s student newspaper, a 2019 Hoosier Star Finalist.

The award, based on issues published during the current school year and evaluated by either a professional journalist, a high school journalism teacher or college journalism professor, puts the Megaphone in the running for 2019 Hoosier Star honors. Those awards will be announced in October at the annual convention of the Indiana High School Press Association at Franklin College. Another round of judging will determine those winners.

Based on its student enrollment, Cathedral is assigned to Division II (high schools with 1,001 to 2,000 students). Cathedral is among the five Division II student newspapers (Floyd Central High School, New Albany High School, Plainfield High School and Plymouth High School) to earn 2019 Hoosier Star Finalist status.

About the Megaphone, the judge wrote, “Your newspaper reflects good reporting and sound interviewing skills that match strong writing and editing skills. Good use of quotes from multiple sources gives a broader perspective to your coverage. Strong sports coverage and opinion page writing add to the newsy nature of your paper. Photography captures candid actions, both on the courts and fields and in the classrooms.”

The newspaper earned marks of distinction for sports coverage, editorials/opinion, editing and photography.

Anna Pohl ’19 and Madi Tran ’19 served as co-editors-in-chief for a staff of 18 students, which produced a printed paper each month and added content to the website, irishmegaphone.com, and Twitter feed, @IrishMegaphone, every school day.
