Mary Ording '09 Hemer Named Girls Volleyball Head Coach

Cathedral High School is excited to announce the hiring of our new girls varsity volleyball coach, Mary Hemer. Hemer is no stranger to Cathedral. She graduated from Cathedral in 2009, and was a member of the Cathedral volleyball state championship teams in 2006 and 2008. Hemer received a volleyball scholarship to the University of Wisconsin where she played three positions and was co-captain her senior year. In her fifth year at Wisconsin, Hemer was a student volunteer coach. That season, Wisconsin's program finished as the NCAA national runner-up. Hemer graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education.

Hemer returned to Cathedral 2014 and served as girls varsity assistant volleyball coach under her former coach and mentor, Jean Kesterson. In 2015, she led Cathedral's boys volleyball team as the interim head coach. From November 2017 to the present, Hemer has been the assistant varsity boys volleyball coach under another one of her former coaches and mentors, Rhonda Low.

In addition to her work with Cathedral's varsity girls and boys volleyball programs, Hemer has been the head coach of the Irish Juniors Volleyball Club since 2014. She has also served as a youth summer camp volleyball coach for more than 10 years.

"I have been around volleyball for 15 years," says Hemer. "Being named the head coach of Cathedral's girls volleyball program is an honor that I don't take lightly. I'm very excited about this opportunity because I know Cathedral, I know the program, and I know the athletes. It's great to be in the driver's seat and help our athletes not only develop their volleyball skills, but help them develop skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives."

In addition to her coaching duties, Hemer is a school counselor at Cathedral. She received her Master's Degree in counseling from Butler University in 2018.

Hemer is looking forward to meeting with both current and prospective players and their families. She will meet with current players and parents on Monday, December 10 at 6:30 p.m. in Cathedral's cafeteria. Hemer will meet with middle school players/prospective Cathedral students on Tuesday, December 11 at 6:30pm in Cathedral's cafeteria.
