The Cathedral Christian Service Program for the has made some major changes to the way students are reflecting upon their service beginning in the 2017-18 school year so please read below carefully. The number of hours remain the same as in the past however the students will provide an oral reflection on their service. More information can be found below, if you have questions please contact Shannon Fox, Administrator of Christian Service, at sfox@gocathedral.com.

Christian Service Program -- Quicklinks

Letter from the Principal:

Dear Cathedral parents and students:

I want to give you detailed information our service requirements for the 2017-2018 school year.

First, All students are required to submit a Christian Service Application each school year. They may chose to stay with the same agency or chose a new one. Either way they need to submit an application. The number of service hours currently required will remain the same—10 hours for freshmen, 15 hours for sophomores, 20 for juniors, and 25 for seniors. The guidelines for the agencies that fit the Christian Service guideline will remain the same.  You can review those guidelines by downloading and reading the Christian Service Project Application found on the Christian Service webpage.

Applications should be submitted to Shannon Fox.   Dr Greer will be following Seniors making sure that their Service hours are on track to meet Graduation Requirements.

As a Holy Cross school, Cathedral expects her students to respond to the Gospel imperative of Matthew 25, which describes a clear set of requirements for those who wish to be citizens of heaven. Jesus tell us that we must actively serve the poor and vulnerable:

“’Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me,’ Then the righteous will answer him and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’ And the king will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’”

The Gospel message is clear—and we at Cathedral wish to base our expectations for Christian service on that message. Starting with the new school year, students will select one service site where they will complete their year’s service requirements. In doing this, relationships are formed with the agency and, more importantly, with the people the students are serving. (Cathedral Activity credits will no longer be required or tracked.)

This is how we touch hearts in ways that transforms lives. Some students may form relationships that bring them back to the same site all four years, while other students may want to have a different experience each year. We hope students will explore their own gifts in responding to different needs and discover a commitment to service they can continue throughout their lives.

This is how we will actively help our students get into heaven. To do less would be to ignore the words of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Attached you will find the Christian Service Requirements 2017-2018 and the application form, which also can be found on our website at gocathedral.com. A hard copy of the Requirements and form will be given to all students in the coming weeks. We look for your support as we move forward to shape Cathedral students into Christian Service leaders who can and will make a difference in the world.

Blessing,
David Worland
Principal

P.S. We encourage students to begin working on next year’s service hours now and throughout the summer! Please note: Applications must be approved before students can start their service.
